Home Sweet Home
How fantastic it is to be home. It doesn’t matter how nice the hotel, how comfortable the travel, or how fulfilling and complete the work done, home is simply the best place to be.
And, I can’t remember what it was like not to have two little people run full pelt into my arms and hug me tight when I walk in the door, with my wonderful wife looking on with a smile. How fantastic.
Catch-up
Tonight’s job was catching up on email. Especially on those that include big attachments that need reading through. I think I managed everything that I needed to, particularly material for meetings that I may miss in the next month due to business travel.
Devaluing the White House
That’s it. I’ve had enough. What modicum of respect for the US administration I was trying to hold on to has disappeared with the crass, opportunistic, foolish and nasty comments from President Obama’s Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel. He obviously couldn’t muster any leadership qualities or wisdom yesterday, and instead simply continued to hammer BP’s CEO, this time making an issue out of his time spent sailing with his son on Saturday.
Here’s a few reasons why Mr Emanuel devalues the White House:
(1) Everyone performs better with some time off to rest and recharge the batteries.
(2) It’s hugely important that Mr Hayward has time for his family and in doing so he shows us that he is a man to whom personal relationships are important.
(3) Using this as an opportunity to send some more invective the way of BP is simply pathetic and reveals the utter political game-playing that personifies the White House response in the past few weeks.
(4) Having such a bully as his CoS has alway made me wonder about Obama’s values: this makes me suspect them even more. Trusting your West Wing staff and day-to-day agenda to such a man – what does that say?
(5) BP have announced that Bob Dudley is taking over day-to-day leadership of the crisis response. Why shouldn’t Mr Hayward keep this appointment with his family?
(6) Does the President really believe that if Tony Hayward isn’t in his office, the crisis response in any ways stutters or stalls? That’s ridiculous. He should stop believing everything he reads in the US press.

I’m excited. 24 hours time and I should be standing on top of Wales with good friends from church, enjoying the exhilarating aftermath of scrambles through snow and ice.
And with that in mind, I’ve been tracking the weather conditions on Snondon by using the webcams available. This snap is from just a few minutes ago and is looking good. I guess to most people it would be nice to see blue sky perhaps, but I’m looking at the snow conditions and hoping there’s been enough fresh fall and freeze-thaw in the past week to make for good climbing.

Trick of the mind
It felt really good on my run at lunchtime. Lovely temperature; very comfortable off-road shoes on their second outing; and I was convinced that I was running faster than previously.
However, after my 9.32 miles around Alice Holt it wasn’t quite as good as I’d thought. I really did feel like I was up quite a few minutes on each lap of the forest.
Well, kind of: in fact, I was being over optimistic about my time. But, I did work out that my time over 9 miles was the same as my time over 6 miles that I had done in my first ever 10K race in the forest last September.
So, I’m pretty encouraged. Just not that good at judging elapsed time!
